And you thought your weekend was busy with all that spring cleaning. Three members of Team ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapptook B.C. High School Championship titles on Saturday (May 24) before heading to Merritt on Sunday (May 25) to win the Cow Trail Classic, which is the season's first B.C. Cup race.Lauren Rosser of Howe Sound Secondary School and Don Ross Secondary School's Maia Kilby and Mo Lawrence faced uphill battles having never competed in back-to-back races. But the heat didn't melt the focus of the young riders who have been tallying top results all season long.Recovering from illness, Lawrence said he felt pretty drained at the end of the Provincial race through Brackendale's Cheekye Fan. But after resting and eating well he was back on point for the Under-17 Boys category in Merritt."It was a tough weekend - two races, two days and lots of driving tires you out," he said. "I almost fainted at the end of the Provincials because I was feeling so sick with the heat rush."Lawrence, who won last year's Nationals in Mount Washington, is undefeated in 14 school races over two seasons after winning his seventh Juvenile Boys race. He's looking to repeat the National title in just his second year of serious competitive racing. At 14 years old, Lawrence had to beat his elders in order to take the Under 17 Cow Trail Classic. He's most comfortable on climbs so the many uphill sections worked to his advantage. And a mass start with the Expert riders meant he could pace himself to their level in order to get a solid lead on his competition. After about 20 minutes of racing and the first big climb, he worked himself into third overall, he said."It was really good just to keep pace with those guys and it helped to get a gap on competitors in my age group."Meanwhile, fellow defending National and High School race series champion Rosser also struck again with double wins in the Juvenile Girls and Junior Women's 15-18 categories, although the uphills were more of an obstacle than a good omen in Merritt."That was a fun course but it was a lot of uphill," she said of the Cow Trail Classic. "There were also a lot of fun downhills at Merritt but it wasn't really that technical." Rosser and Provincial Junior winner Alison MacKellar of Don Ross Secondary School fed off each others' need for speed on the Cow Trail, said Rosser. MacKellar finished just behind Rosser in second place. "We're both about the same [skill level] at biking so we're both pushing each other to see who can go faster," she said. Provincial Senior winner Eden Imbeau finished in fourth place and Kristen Drygas, who placed third in the Provincial Juvenile category, finished fifth in the Cow Trails Classic Junior Women's 15-18 to cap off a ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappdomination. Teammate Summer Griffin placed fourth in the Provincial Juvenile category. The lungs of steel didn't stop there. Grade 8 Don Ross student Maia Kilby won the Provincial Bantam category (her sixth win of the season) before pedaling to the Under-15 B.C. Cup win the next day. Howe Sound Secondary's Zac Gartside and Hayden Drygas completed a one-two punch in the Senior Boys Provincial category, while teammate Jacob Melville followed up in seventh place.Gartside said he got a good start and drafted Argyle Secondary School third-place finisher Erik Mulder for a time before making his move. "It was tiring without a lot of good downhills," said Gartside. "But when I got to the downhill I just passed him and went on from there."Meanwhile, Drygas went on the take another second place in the Cow Trail Classic Junior Expert Men category. The Don Ross team invaded the Provincial Bantam standings as Rob Leigh (second), Quinn Moberg (third), Owen Scully (fifth) and Griffin Dare (sixth) took full advantage of their home trails.Meanwhile, Toby Patterson-Nolan finished eighth in Merritt's U-17 after taking third place in the Provincial Junior category. Aiden Davis, 14, earned a ninth place Cow Trail finish. The ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵappriding contingent continues its command of youth riding in the coming weeks, with Sechelt's Rat Race on Saturday (May 31) and Surrey's Junkyard Dog next Saturday (June 7).
