Warning: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 Episode 2 of The Last of Us (but we tried to limit them).
For fans of the hit HBO zombie apocalypse show The Last of Us, the second episode of season two (titled "Through the Valley") was massive.
in the episode "The Red Wedding times a million," a reference to a famous episode from Game of Thrones (another hit HBO show).
With two major events happening and plenty of tense moments, it was one of the most impactful episodes in a series with plenty of action, drama, and stress already.
In the middle of all the chaos, sites just outside of Metro Vancouver served as locations for the crucial action.
The Last of Us in a mine
In one scene, series star Pedro Pascal (who plays Joel) and Isabela Merced (Dina), take shelter in what looks like a decrepit old industrial structure.
The building is Mill No. 3 at the . It's an award-winning museum, though the mill is over 100 years old. People can ; it's just north of Lions Bay on the way to Squamish.
It was a big moment for the museum, says Deron Johnston, the museum's director of site and assets.
"The art department and set designers were very thorough in their efforts at authenticity. They made several trips here and took many photographs to make certain set pieces appear as if they were real," he tells V.I.A.
The shots in the episode, which cover only a few minutes of time in the show's reality, were filmed in one day.
“At one point they had over 300,000 watts of lighting power aimed at the outside of the mill to ensure a consistent amount of light coming through the windows in the mill throughout their single shoot day," Johnston explains.
It's not the first time the mine museum has shown up on TV.
"The Britannia Mine Museum has been a popular film site for many high-profile movies and TV shows over the years," explains Johnston. "Including X-Files, MacGyver, 21 Jump Street, Smallville, The Fantastic Four, and Snake Eyes."
The Last of Us on a Mission
Several scenes in the episode were set at a lodge on the side of a mountain.
In reality, the lodge is really a house located in Mission. In fact, after shooting wrapped for The Last of Us, the house was sold. BC Assessment records show it sold for $3.2 million.
Many other scenes that have already aired from season two were shot at a massive set at Britannia Beach that was built to replicate Jackson, Wyoming.
There was also a scene set in a grocery store; the grocery store's exterior was built and shot outside of Kamloops.
