Driver ticketed on Hwy. 99 for HOV, phony permit, minivan towed

Minivan stopped, then towed away after RCMP HOV check in Delta

A woman ticketed for driving without insurance and for driving solo in the high-occupancy vehicle lane, had to find her own way home last week after being stopped on Hwy. 99, near Hwy. 17A, in Delta.

RCMP stopped the blue minivan mid morning, April 15, as they were doing HOV checks.

“When BC Highway Patrol does HOV lane checks, we’re not just looking for lane cheaters,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “We’re also keeping our eyes open for prohibited drivers, outstanding arrest warrants, contraband weapons and drugs, or anything that might be criminal or dangerous.”

The minivan also had a temporary operating permit taped to the window, but police say that it was a forgery.

A 50-year-old woman from Langley was ticketed under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving in the HOV lane against regulations, making a lane change over a solid white line and driving without insurance.

The driver also has been summoned to appear in court on criminal charges at a later date regarding the operating permit. The minivan was towed away, at the owner’s expense.

“Keeping your eyes open is the basic rule of good police work. We’re confident the roads are a little safer with this uninsured vehicle off the road,” McLaughlin said.
